Alloy sheet is one of the first products produced after the invention of iron. In general, an alloy is a combination of several different elements. Alloying is done to optimize and increase the mechanical and chemical properties of the metal. One of the advantages of alloy sheets over non-alloyed sheets is their greater resistance to very high and very low temperatures.

Alloy sheet features

As we mentioned, an alloy is a combination of one or more different metals or elements together. The salient features of these products include high resistance to sudden temperature drops or increases, low melting point, high tensile strength, moisture resistance, rust resistance, and environmental friendliness.

Also, these alloy sheets are generally divided into two types: steel and non-steel. In the rest of this article, we will examine and describe each of these products.

Types of steel alloy sheets

Steel is an alloy of iron that is formed by adding variable percentages of carbon, silicon, manganese, phosphorus and sulfur. And in some cases, steel alloys are also used to produce some products. However, it is worth mentioning that steel alloy sheet also has two types: low alloy and high alloy, which are:

1. CK45 sheet:

This steel contains alloying elements of silicon and manganese. This sheet has many uses in the manufacture of heavy and agricultural machinery, industrial crankshafts, lathe shafts and pump shafts. The most important features of this sheet include high strength and hardness and resistance to moisture and rust.

2. MO40:

This sheet is a type of low-alloy and hard steel that is heat treatable. Formability, resistance to very high temperatures, abrasion, corrosion and impact resistance are some of the prominent features of this alloy product. It is also worth mentioning that this type of alloy sheet has many applications in cases such as downhole equipment in the oil and gas industries, parts exposed to pressure such as bolts and nuts, spoons and forks, and the manufacture of industrial machines such as milling machines.

3. Black sheet or ST52:

This product is a type of low-carbon and fire-resistant alloy sheet that reduces costs in construction projects by reducing the volume of steel consumed. Weldability, formability and strength are important features of this type of sheet. This sheet is also used in the construction of rails, crane bodies, bridge skeletons and walls of industrial parts and in processes that require a lot of welded joints.

4. A516:

Hardness, high pressure tolerance, and fire resistance are among the most important features of this alloy sheet. It should be noted that it is also widely used in the manufacture of pressure vessels, fittings, and construction.

5. A283:

This type of sheet has weldability and formability, and is used in the manufacture of boilers and low-pressure tanks, coils, pipes, and sections.

Non-steel alloy sheets

1. Brass alloy sheet:

Brass alloy is a combination of two elements, zinc and copper. Brass alloy sheet is used in decoration, making locks, gears, bearings, handles, ammunition casings, valves and plumbing. The presence of zinc in the composition of this alloy increases its corrosion resistance.

2. Amalgam sheet:

Amalgam sheet is made from a combination of mercury metal with other elements such as zinc, silver, tin, copper, palladium and gold. The ability to strengthen and expand, and resistance to corrosion are also characteristics of this sheet. Also, the decrease or increase in the percentage of mercury element in the chemical composition of this alloy determines its physical state of liquid, paste or solid.

3. Pewter sheet:

Pewter sheet is a malleable, soft, and flexible sheet. It is a very desirable alloy for making products with three-dimensional designs. 90 to 92 percent of the chemical composition of this sheet also includes tin. Antimony, copper, bismuth, and sometimes silver are also among the other elements found in the pewter alloy.

4. Bronze sheet:

This alloy is a combination of tin and phosphorus. Its important features include flexibility and ductility, corrosion resistance, high resistance to abrasion, and electrical conductivity. Low friction coefficient, high strength while being flexible and elastic, and fine-grained are other properties of this alloy sheet. This product has many uses in the electronics industry, in the manufacture of computer parts, in the transportation of nuclear fuel, in the manufacture of bolts and nuts, and in the manufacture of ship propellers.

5. Tin-plated sheet:

Covering the surface of metals with tin is called tin plating. The presence of a thin layer of tin on steel sheets increases corrosion resistance. Tin-plated alloy sheet is used in the canning, paint packaging, automotive, and fence industries. This sheet is resistant to erosion and has good formability, soldering, weldability, and bending properties, which are among its important properties.
